ICON, is the Greek word EIKON meaning image. It is the reflection of Gods reality. The icon is the prayer in colour, the bridge that unites our soul with Heaven.
The Byzantine icon combines Classical Greek, Roman and Middle Eastern art traditions. During the 2000 year history of Byzantine iconwriting generations of theologians and artists established strict rules or canons on the representations of Holy Images. Today the forgotten art of the icon is being rediscovered and we see a renaissance of iconwriting in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and North America.
"The nature of the icon cannot be grasped by means of pure art criticism, nor by the adoption of a sentimental point of view. Its forms are based on the wisdom obtained in the theological and liturgical writing of the Eastern Orthodox Church and are intimately bound up with the experience of the contemplative life."
